The problem is that you think you are in a money-creation business.
As a working professional, you are used to understanding the mechanics of money, i.e., going to the office, coming back home, and creating money through salary at the end of the month.
This traditional approach, however, is becoming increasingly challenging in today’s rapidly evolving economy. According to a recent report by NASSCOM, India’s IT sector is expected to face a potential job loss of 3 million by 2024 due to automation and changing skill requirements.
There is nothing wrong with this money-creation process. You believe that to make more money, you need to work more hours, get a better-paying job, or take an extra job.
But is this sustainable in the long run?
“In this new world, you have to be a lifelong learner. You have to be curious, resilient and imaginative.” – Nandan Nilekani, Co-founder of Infosys
If you look at the above keywords, you are searching for:
- More work
- Better paying
- Extra job
You are seeking more work, payment, and an extra job in all the above cases. Indirectly, you are looking for more work, which further burdens you.
In your present job, you are already stressed with deadlines, bosses on the top of your head, and a daily fighting job.
You are looking for more bosses on your head, more stress, and compensation for more stress. Boss and work = money.
In your present job, you are already stressed with deadlines, bosses on the top of your head, and a daily fighting job. The impact of this constant stress is evident in the rising cases of burnout among Indian professionals. A 2023 survey by LinkedIn found that 55% of Indian professionals reported feeling burned out, with work-related stress being the primary cause.
.You are looking for more bosses on your head, more stress, and compensation for more stress. Boss and work = money. This equation, however, is rapidly changing in the digital age.
All of the above looks good and satisfying when you are 21 and fresh out of college or university after your master’s program at the beginning of your career.
When you are already in a job, this is a trap to keep you surviving and in the loop.
The impact of this is:
- You are constantly under stress, non-focused, and seeking an escape from being in the same boat.
- Unknowingly, you demand more stress, work, pressure, and non-freedom.
You are responsible for your family and need monthly funds to keep the family and its goals alive. You have planned for your children’s education, and there are financial goals. There might be a home loan or car loan, at least on your head, that never allows you to make any risky decision, even though the risk is only some percent.
The impact of this is:
You feel you are in a trap.
In one place, you are looking for freedom from your job/work, while in another, you are looking for a new job and more work. Both are contradictory.
As you are demanding more pressure and work, you will get it sooner or later.
What you search for – you get it sooner or later.
Even when you come home, you are looking for freelancer opportunities or talking to a friend to earn more income from other freelance work/freelancer jobs.
The time you should have allowed to the family is spent speaking to people and searching for new job opportunities.
Assuming your current job pays you 1 Lac Rupees and takes 8–10 hours from you.
Being optimistic means you get a new job/freelancer job that pays you 10%-20% more.
You will generate 20K more from the new job/freelancer work.
Being extra positive, your current job will give you a 7 percent raise, plus your new job will give you a 20 percent raise, so your new total will be 27 percent higher than your current job’s.
An extra 20-27 percent from 1 Lac to 120K in a year is a good raise.
Can you raise it further?
Can we make it 200K in total?
You have a total of 24 hours in a day. Six hours you will sleep.
Assuming your current job starts at 9 AM and ends by 6 PM, add 1 hour more to get ready, plus commute time.
Nine hours on the job. 2 hours commute, and returning to your home time.
Add 1 hour more to start the work
Your present job officially takes 9 hours. It is a 12-hour job.
Because of your new job/work, you will add two more hours, for 14-15 hours.
You have no time left for family.
You cannot grow further.
There is a ceiling.
You are overstressed.
The maximum growth you could hit is 20-27 percent; you are done and cannot grow further.
